It was a keenly-contested match with both teams giving out their best till the last whistle.
"We are happy and satisfied," said England's manager Maureen Mead after the victory.
"We achieved what we can," added she.
A disappointed South African coach Marleen Wagner said "England deserved to win on today's performance."
England topped the first quarter 17-11 thanks to the attacking duo of Lorraine Law and Tracey Neville.
But South Africa fought back in the second quarter taking an early 17-10 lead and eventually outplaying their rivals 28-27. Irene Van Dyk and Rosima Mogola performed brilliantly for their team.
The two teams were tied 20-20, 22-22, 24-24 and 27-27 in the second quarter before South Africa went ahead.
The early part of the third quarter witnessed neck-and-neck fight before England raced to 19-13 lead.
South Africa with an attacking combination of Irene and Patricia Basson gave hard times to England in the last quarter before going down 54-56.
